Svaka četvrta osoba ima problema sa zglobovima, a broj raste. Osnovni uzrok je trošenje zglobne hrskavice, koju uzrokuju promjene u starosti i mehaničko trošenje. Zglobna hrskavica nije mrtvo tkivo. Ona se sastoji od stanica hrskavice koje proizvode tkivo hrskavice. To tkivo se sastoji od 70% kolagena. Formiranje i trošenje hrskavice se odvija neprestano, a problem nastaje kada trošenje premaši proizvodnju.
Korištenje djelomično hidroliziranog kolagena (želatine), datira iz srednjeg vijeka, točnije 1175. godine, kada je Sv.Hildegard zapisao da konzumiranje želatine smanjuje bol u zglobovima i povećava njihovu pokretljivost. Prva komercijalna proizvodnja želatine datira iz 1685. godine, kada su je prvi put proizveli u Nizozemskoj.
Nedavna istraživanja su pokazala da konzumacija hidroliziranog kolagena pomaže pri regeneraciji hrskavice. Hidroliziraju kolagen pridobivaju iz farmaceutske želatine, a postupak se naziva enzimska razgradnja. Korišteni enzimi su odobreni od strane nadležnih institucija. Tako obrađen hidrolizat kolagena se dokazano apsorbira u probavnom sustavu, a najviše ga se skuplja u zglobni hrskavici.
Nekoliko istraživanja kod različitih ciljnih grupa (fizički aktivni ljudi, sportaši, osobe s prekomjernom težinom i stariji) je pokazalo da dugotrajna primjena hidroliziranog kolagena (barem 12-24 tjedna) poboljšava pokretljivost zglobova i smanjuje bol u zglobovima.
